Henry B Freeman MOH
Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. A career soldier who spent his entire active life in the United States Army, he enlisted in the 10th United States Regular Infantry on July 16, 1855. Appointed a 1st Lieutenant in the 18th United States Regular Infantry in May 1862, he was brevetted Captain, US Regular Army in December for gallantry in the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and brevetted Major in September 1863 for gallantry in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. He was awarded the CMOH for extraordinary heroism in the Battle of Stone’s River on December 31, 1862. His citation reads “Voluntarily went to the front and picked up and carried to a place of safety, under a heavy fire from the enemy, an acting field officer who had been wounded, and was about to fall into enemy hands”.
After the close of the Civil War much of his remaining career was spent on Indian frontiers and reservations in Wyoming, Ohio, Colorado Utah, and Oklahoma. He finally received his Medal of Honor on 17 February 1894. Promoted to Brigadier General in 1901, he received the Indian Campaign Medal. He died in October 1915 at Douglas, Wyoming, and is buried to the right of Arlington House with a gravestone unique for having the Medal of Honor depicted on the side.
