Ambrose Madden (1820-1863) is a recipient of sadly little is known about. He was born in Cork, in Southern Ireland in 1820. He enlisted with the 41st Regiment of Foot (later Royal Welsh Regiment) prior to the outbreak of the Crimean War.

He had risen to the rank of Sergeant Major when on the 26th October 1854 at Little Inkerman, he led a party of men from the 41st Regiment which cut off and taken prisoner one Russian officer and 14 privates, three of whom were personally captured by Madden. Madden was awarded the Victoria Cross for these actions (London Gazette, 24th February 1857).
On 24th December 1858, Madden was appointed an Ensign in the 2nd West India Regiment and spent the remaining 5 years of his life serving in the Caribbean. He died in Jamaica on 1st January 1863 and was buried at Up Park Military Camp Cemetery, Kingston. His medals are held by the Welsh Regiment Museum, Cardiff Castle.
