EGM CITATION:
On the 26th September, 1938, whilst this officer was in charge of a sabre troop patrolling the foothills, four miles to the south-west of Beisan, he was heavily fired on by a band numbering about 150 lining both banks of the Wadi Shubash.’ Although largely outnumbered, Rais Abdul Kadir Effendi Saleh displayed exceptional qualities of leadership, tactical skill, and coolness, and succeeded, after a brisk fight, in forcing the enemy to retire. The band obstinately held two subsequent positions, and this officer, by his determination and skilful fire-and-movement tactics, drove them backstep by step half way up the hills, when, owing to the rocky country and failing light he was unable to continue. Five of the enemy were killed and several were wounded. This officer’s inspiring leadership stood his troop in excellent stead, as some of its members had only recently completed their recruit training. He has on several occasions given first-class service, particularly so throughout the disturbances of 1936. Rais Abdul Kadir Effendi Saleh died on the 2nd December, 1938, of wounds inflicted during an engagement on the previous day.
