Benjamin B Levy MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as Drummer Boy, Private in Company G, 1st New York Volunteer Infantry. In the Battle at Glendale, Virginia on June 30, 1862 he took the gun of a sick comrade and went into the fight. When the color bearers were shot down, he carried the colors and saved them from Confederate capture. He received the Medal on March 1, 1865. He is one of seventeen Jewish Americans known to have received the Medal of Honor since its inception during the Civil War to the present.

 

MOH CITATION:

This soldier, a drummer boy, took the gun of a sick comrade, went into the fight, and when the color bearers were shot down, carried the colors and saved them from capture.
