Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on June 22, 1899 for his actions as a private with Company C, 17th US Infantry, US Army, on July 1, 1898 at El Caney, Cuba. A native of Germany, he emigrated to Canton, Ohio and joined the US Army , serving in the Spanish-American War. Following the war, he was discharged at the rank of sergeant major and returned to Ohio where he died at the age of 70. He received his Medal on June 22, 1899.

Gallantly assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines and under heavy fire from the enemy.
