Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Union Army in Company I, 90th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on August 23, 1862. His citation reads “Voluntarly and at great personal risk, Breyer picked up and unexploded shell and threw it away, thus doubtless saving the life of a comrade whose arm had been taken off by the same shell.” He would not receive his Medal of Honor until 8 July 1896.
