Conrad Schmidt MOH

American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. A German immigrant, he was issued the award on March 16, 1896 for his actions as a quartermaster sergeant with Company K, 2nd US Cavalry, US Army, on September 19, 1864 at the Battle of Openquon (also known as the 3rd Battle of Winchester), Virginia. He joined the US Army in 1861 and was discharged in December 1866 and returned to Kansas where he died at the age of 78.

 

MOH CITATION:

Went to the assistance of his regimental commander, whose horse had been killed under him in a charge, mounted the officer behind him, under a heavy fire from the enemy, and returned him to his command.
