David was born in India in 1871, the son of John and Eliza MacMillan (nee Atkinson). On 7th October 1910, he married Grace Jones in Bombay, India, and she was presented with his posthumous Albert Medal after his death.
On the 9th April 1918, a serious fire broke out in the residential quarter of the town of Keonjhar Garh, in the Feudatory State of Keonjhar, India.
