Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Ireland, he served as a Private, in Company G, 5th U.S. Infantry. On the dates between October 21, 1876 to January 8, 1877, Trooper Ryan performed gallantly in actions against hostile Indians at Cedar Creek, Montana. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 27, 1877 and later achieved the rank of Sergeant.
