Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted on August 23, 1862 in Phelps, New York for service with Company C, 148th New York Infantry. He was appointed to Corporal on July 1, 1864. During action at Chapin’s Farm, Virginia on September 29, 1864, Corporal Edward (Edwin) Parsons Van Winkle “took position in advance of the skirmish line and drove the enemy’s cannoneers from their guns.” For this “extraordinary heroism” he was awarded the Medal of Honor, issued April 6, 1865. Promoted to Sergeant on August 31, 1864, he mustered out with his company in Richmond, Virginia on June 22, 1865.
