Edwin Goodrich MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Major in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Lieutenant in Company D, 9th New York Cavalry for action in November 1864 near Cedar Creek, Virgina. His citation reads “While the command was falling back, he returned and in the face of the enemy rescued a sergeant from under his fallen horse.” He did not receive his Medal of Honor until 30 years after the incident on May 14, 1894. His remains were cremated at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois before being returned to Portland, Michigan.

 

MOH CITATION:

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant Edwin Goodrich, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on November, 1864, while serving with Company D, 9th New York Cavalry, in action at Cedar Creek, Virginia. While the command was falling back, First Lieutenant Goodrich returned, and in the face of the enemy rescued a sergeant from under his fallen horse.
