Edwin M Truell MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, at the the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army in August 1862. On July 21, 1864, while serving in Company E, 12th Wisconsin Infantry, Private Truell’s unit was ordered to attack a Confederate position at Atlanta, Georgia. Although severely wounded in a charge, Private Truell remained with the regiment until again severely wounded, losing his leg and was removed from the field. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on March 11, 1870. He mustered out with the regiment as a 1st Lieutenant in May 1865. He died at the age of 66 in Mauston, Wisconsin.
MOH CITATION:
Although severely wounded in a charge, he remained with the regiment until again severely wounded, losing his leg.
