b. 24/03/1851 Hendricks County, Indiana. d. 09/07/1923 San Diego, California.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 23/04/1875 Sappa Creek, Kansas.

Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company H, 6th US Cavalry. At Sappa Creek, Kansas, April 23, 1875, with five other volunteers, he waded in muddy water up the creek to a position directly behind an entrenched Cheyenne position. There behind the enemy which was waiting for the main Army Cavalry column to advance, they sprang a surprise rear attack resulting in the capture of the entire hostile camp. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He received his Medal on November 16, 1876.

 

MOH CITATION:

With five other men he waded in mud and water up the creek to a position directly behind an entrenched Cheyenne position, who were using natural bank pits to good advantage against the main column. This surprise attack from the enemy rear broke their resistance.
