Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company H, 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for action on June 17, 1864 at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. He did not receive his Medal of Honor until August 2, 1897.

Voluntarily exposed himself to a heavy fire to bring off a wounded comrade.
