Francis Thomas Ryan MOH

b. 06/04/1862 Massachusetts. d. 14/06/1927 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 20-22/06/1900 China.

He was born (and is buried) as Frank Gallagher. He was issued the award on July 19, 1901 for his actions as a US Navy coxswain assigned to the Navy cruiser USS Newark (C-1) on June 13-20, 1900. After enlisting in the US Navy under the name Francis T. Ryan, he was sent to China as part of the Eight-Nation Alliance to quell the Boxer oppression.

 

MOH CITATION:

In action with the relief expediton of the Allied forces in China during the battles of 13, 20 21, and 22 June 1900. Throughout this period and in the presence of the enemy, Ryan distinguished himself by meritorious conduct.
