Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Private in Company G, 35th Massachusetts Infantry for action on September 17, 1862 at Antietam, Maryland. He did not receive his Medal until February 21, 1874.
MOH CITATION:
Was among the last to leave the field at Antietam and was instrumental in saving the lives of several of his comrades at the imminent risk of his own. At Spotsylvania was foremost in line in the assault, where he lost a leg.
