Frederick William “Fred” Myers MOH

Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor Recipient. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of the White River, South Dakota, on January 1, 1891, when he held his position and repelled a superior force of Indians during repeated assaults. Born in Brunswick, Germany, he enlisted on May 17, 1873, at age 25, in St. Louis, Missouri, listing his previous occupation as a laborer. He reenlisted on September 4, 1878, in Company I, 7th United States Cavalry, and then reenlisted again, on November 20, 1883, in Company K, 6th United States Cavalry, where he participated in the Battle of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. He received his Medal of Honor a month later on February 4, 1891. He left military service on November 20, 1893, and took a job as a laborer and watchman at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, DC.
