Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the 19th United States Infantry when he earned his Medal. He was awarded the Medal June 26, 1900. He later rose to the rank of Colonel. Additionally, Colonel Stewart commanded the 339th infantry regiment during the “Polar Bear” expedition in Russia in 1918/1919.
MOH CITATION:
While crossing a river in the face of the enemy, this officer plunged in and at the imminent risk of his own life saved from drowning an enlisted man of his regiment.
