George Frederick Mager MOH

b. 23/02/1875 Phillipsburg, New Jersey. d. 12/04/1938 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 11/05/1898 Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as an Apprentice First Class on board the “USS Marblehead”. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads “Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Mager set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.” His Medal was awarded to him on November 2, 1899.

 

MOH CITATION:

On board the U.S.S. Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Mager displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.
