George Green MOH

Green was born in Elsham, Lincolnshire on 16th July 1840. It is not known exactly when he emigrated to the US, but he joined the Union Army from Columbus, Ohio on 26th April 1861. He was mustered in as a Private in Company H, 11th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted to Corporal on September 1st, 1862. He would be awarded the CMOH for his heroism at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, on November 25, 1863. His citation reads “Scaled the enemy’s works and in a hand-to-hand fight, helped capture the flag of the 18th Alabama Infantry (C.S.A.).” He served a full three years in the field, and was honorably mustered out upon the expiration of his term of enlistment on June 11, 1864. His Medal was awarded to him on January 12, 1892, twenty-nine years later.

 

MOH CITATION:

Scaled the enemy’s works and in a hand-to-hand fight helped capture the flag of the 18th Alabama Infantry (C.S.A.).
