Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at New York, New York and served as a Chief Quarter Gunner. His citation reads “Serving on board the USS Kansas, Hill displayed great coolness and self-possession at the time Comdr. A.F.Crosman and others drowned, near Greytown, Nicaragua, 12 April 1872, and by extraordinary heroism and personal exertion, prevented greater loss of life”.
