George Holt MOH

b. 1840 Louisville, Kentucky. d. 26/08/1875 Chelsea, Massachusetts.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 03/07/1871 Hamburg Harbor, Germany.

Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at Kentucky and served as a Quarter Gunner. His citation reads “On board the USS Plymouth, Hamburg Harbor, 3 July 1871. Jumping overboard at the imminent risk of his life, Holt, with a comrade, rescued from drowning one of a party who was thrown from a shore boat into a four-knot running tide while the boat was coming alongside the ship”. Little is known about his life following the award.
