Indian Wars Medal of Honor recipient. He served as a Private in Company K, 5th US Cavalry of the Arizona Territory. In the winter of 1873, his company was sent to the Tonto Basin where Western Apache bands and Yavapais had been raiding home settlers and eluding troops. On January 22, 1873, in engagements with hostile Indians at Tonto Creek, Arizona, Private Hooker was killed while defending his company’s position. For gallantry in action, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on August 12, 1875 and was the last Medal of Honor recipient of the Indian campaign.
