Awarded the New Zealand Cross for his role on 10 April 1869 in running a gauntlet of shooting to help relieve troops trapped in a pa at Mohaka. He had a very colourful life, joining the British Navy in 1851 and taking part in the bombardment of Sevastopol in the Crimean War. He then served under Garibaldi in Italy and was present at the relief of Lucknow in the Indian Mutiny. He arrived in New Zealand and joined up with Von Tempsky’s Forest Rangers where he distinguished himself in the Land Wars fought throughout the 1860s. Even in civilian life he was not far from the action, saving a girl from drowning in 1896 for which he received the Humane Society medal. At the age of 63 he even volunteered for service in the Anglo/Boer War in South Africa.
