George W Mathews MOH

Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. At the rank of captain, he served as an assistant surgeon in the United States Army in the 36th Infantry, U.S. Volunteers. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on October 29, 1899 near Labo, Luzon, Philippine Islands. In 1900 he was promoted to the rank of major, serving as a surgeon. He received his Medal on March 14, 1902. He left the military in February of 1905 with a disability and died the following year.

 

MOH CITATION:

While in attendance upon the wounded and under a severe fire from the enemy, seized a carbine and beat off an attack upon wounded officers and men under his charge.
