Harry C W Wrigg NZC

Awarded the New Zealand Cross. Born in Ireland to a large family, he emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 and soon found himself involved in the fighting of the NZ Wars of the 1860s. As a cornet in the Bay of Plenty Cavalry Volunteers, he showed gallantry in action at Opotiki on 29 June 1867 and it was for this that he was later awarded the NZ Cross. In later life he worked as a civil engineer and artist, a chief draughtsman, and then in the Public Works Department. There was some controversy about his award but it stood.
