Henry S Webster MOH

b. 07/01/1845 Stockholm, New York. d. 02/07/1910 Brattleboro, Vermont.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 15/01/1865 Fort Fisher, North Carolina.

ebster volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Union steamer USS Susquehanna (1850). His enlistment is credited to the state of New York.

On January 15, 1865, the North Carolina Confederate stronghold of Fort Fisher was taken by a combined Union storming party of sailors, marines, and soldiers under the command of Admiral David Dixon Porter and General Alfred Terry. Webster was a member of the storming party.

 

MOH CITATION:

On board the U.S.S. Susquehanna during the assault on Fort Fisher, 15 January 1865. When enemy fire halted the attempt by his landing party to enter the fort and more than two-thirds of the men fell back along the open beach, Webster voluntarily remained with one of his wounded officers, under fire, until aid could be obtained to bring him to the rear.
