Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. With his brother Allen, they enlisted in the Union Army at Port Jarvis, New York as Privates serving in companies of the 4th New York Heavy Artillery. On April 1, 1865, at White Oak Road, Virginia, they made a hazardous reconnaissance mission against Confederate forces. Advancing through the timber and preceding the Union line of battle, they signaled the troops leading them through the obstruction. James and Allen Thompson are the only brothers to receive the Medal of Honor together on the same date and for the same action. He did not receive his Medal until April 22, 1896.
