James Samuel Hill MOH

b. 1845 Lyons, New York. d. 10/04/1865 Danville, Virginia.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 30/07/1864 Petersburg, Virginia.

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was a Prisoner of War. He entered the Union Army at Lyons, New York. He served as a Sergeant in Company C, 14th New York Heavy Artillery. He was awarded the CMOH for action on July 30, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads “Capture of flag, shooting a Confederate officer who was rallying his men with the colors in his hand.” He was awarded the Medal on December 1, 1864. He became a POW later in the war, and died shortly after the surrender of the Confederate forces at Appamattox in April, 1865.
