Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. A veteran of the Civil War, he was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on November 12, 1861. He served in the Volunteers for a year before accepting a transfer to the Regular Army on November 14, 1862. On that date he was mustered into Battery L, 4th United States Regular Artillery, with whom he served through the rest of his tenure during the war. After the end of the conflict he remained in the Regular Army, and was mustered into Company L, 1st United States Regular Cavalry. Rising to Sergeant, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions be performed while a Private stationed in Arizona during the winter of 1872-73. His citation reads simply “Gallant conduct during campaigns and engagements with Apaches.” His Medal was awarded to him on April 12, 1875. After the war, the native Pennsylvanian settled in Turkey Creek, Carroll County, Georgia, where he was an overseer of a rifle range. He then moved to New Port Richey, Florida, where he lived out his days, passing away in 1927.
