James Toban MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. Also known as Jacobus W. Tobin, he served as a Sergeant, Company C, 9th Michigan Cavalry. At Aiken, South Carolina, February 11, 1865 his company was in retreat of a Confederate advance. At his own risk, he returned in the face of the enemy and rescued Major William C. Stevens, Cavalry Commander, who had been thrown from his horse. He did not receive the Medal until July 6, 1896.

Voluntarily and at great personal risk returned, in the face of the advance of the enemy, and rescued from impending death or capture, Maj. William C. Stevens, 9th Michigan Cavalry, who had been thrown from his horse.
