John Alexander Sutherland MOH

b. 19/02/1849 Harrodsburg, Indiana. d. 02/12/1891 El Reno, Oklahoma.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 22/08/1868 – 10/1868 Black Mountains, Arizona Territory.

Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted October 10, 1864 for service with C Company, 43rd Indiana Infantry Regiment and mustered out on June 15, 1865 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted for service with the 8th US Calvary and served with them for two full terms. On June 24, 1869, Corporal Sutherland was awarded the CMOH “for bravery in scouts and actions against Indians” while assigned to the Arizona Territory from August to October 1868. After his last enlistment, he lived in Indiana and Kansas before moving to Oklahoma after El Reno opened for settlement; he died there of bronchial pneumonia.
