American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on June 17, 1865 for his actions as a private with Company F, 17th Indiana Volunteer Mounted Infantry (a part of Wilson’s Raiders), US Army, on April 19, 1865, at the Battle of Culloden, Georgia, ten days after the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, Virginia. He enlisted in the US Army in June 1861 and was discharged in August 1865. Following the war, he eventually relocated to Colorado where he died at the age of 63. His Medal of Honor citation reads: “For extraordinary heroism on April, 1865, while serving with Company F, 17th Indiana Mounted Infantry, in action at Culloden, Georgia, for capture of flag of Worrill Grays (Confederate States of America).” He received the Medal on 17 June 1865.
