John Grady MOH

Veracruz Occupation Medal of Honor Recipient. A native of Canada, he was issued the award on December 4, 1915 for his actions as a US Navy lieutenant on April 22, 1914, at the Battle of Veracruz, Mexico, that began the seven month US occupation of Veracruz in response to the Tampico Affair. He enlisted in the US Navy in June 1890 and participated in the Battle of Manila Bay, Philippine Islands, during the Spanish-American War. Following the Veracruz affair, he saw action in World War I, for which he was awarded the Navy Cross while commanding the Navy transport vessel USS Wilhelmina (ID-2168). He retired from the US Navy in 1922 at the rank of captain with 32 years of continuous military service. His Medal of Honor citation reads: “For distinguished conduct in battle, engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April 1914. During the second day’s fighting, the service performed by Lt. Grady, in command of the 2d Regiment, Artillery, was eminent and conspicuous. From necessarily exposed positions, he shelled the enemy from the strongest position.”

 

MOH CITATION:

For distinguished conduct in battle, engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April 1914. During the second day’s fighting, the service performed by Lt. Grady, in command of the 2d Regiment, Artillery, was eminent and conspicuous. From necessarily exposed positions, he shelled the enemy from the strongest position.
