John H Harbourne MOH

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in England, he immigrated to the United States in 1850. He was mustered in as a Private in Company K, 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on May 16, 1864. A month later, on June 17, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia, he performed the brave deed that would have him awarded the Medal of Honor. His citation reads “Capture of flag along with three enemy men.” Just before the act cited he had taken the flag of the regiment, the color guard having all been killed, and led the assault his regiment participated in. After grabbing the Confederate flag from a wounded rebel color bearer, he was shot in the foot. Despite the pain, he recovered and captured the three Confederates. The next day he was called to General Ambrose Burnside, who commended him before he was sent off to the hospital. He was discharged due to disability from his wounds on September 19, 1864. His Medal was awarded to him on September 24, 1897.
