John Johnson 1872 MOH

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 12/04/1872 near Greytown, Nicaragua.

Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at Pennsylvania and served as a Seaman. His citation reads “Serving on board the USS Kansas, near Greytown, Nicaragua, 12 April 1872, Johnson displayed great coolness and self-possession at the time Comdr. A.F. Crosman and others were drowned and, by extraordinary heroism and personal exertion, prevented greater loss of life”. Nothing is known about his life following the award of the Medal of Honor.
