McLennon was born in 1855 at Fort Belknap, Texas, to Irish (County Kilkenny) immigrant parents, Michael and Mary (Ryan) McLennon. The couple had five children and John was a twin to his sister, Annie. He served as a Sergeant in Company A, 7th U.S. Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on August 9, 1877 at Big Hole, Montana. He received his Medal on December 2, 1878.
