b. 22/03/1843 Chillicothe, Ohio. d. 28/12/1922 North Bend, Nebraska.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 22/05/1863 Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, March 22, 1843, he served as a Private in Company E, 37th Ohio Infantry, Union Army. During actions at Vicksburg Mississippi, May 22, 1863, Private Hanks voluntarily went to assist a downed comrade lying between the lines. Under heavy Confederate fire, he rescued the wounded soldier, gave him water and carried him off the field. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 19, 1897. He died in North Bend, Nebraska, December 28, 1922.

Voluntarily and under fire went to the rescue of a wounded comrade lying between the lines, gave him water, and brought him off the field.
