Joseph Henderson MOH

b. 12/1869 Leavenworth, Kansas. d. 19/12/1938 Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 02/07/1909 Patian Island, Philippines.

Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Leavenworth, Kansas, he served as a Sergeant in Troop B, 6th Cavalry US Army. On July 2, 1909, at Patian Island, Philippine Islands, Sergeant Henderson’s troop was in actions against hostile Moros. Under heavy fire Sergeant Henderson on his own, advanced to about 15 yards of the enemy position and refastened to a tree a block and tackle used in checking the recoil of a mountain gun. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor and later obtained the rank of Master Sergeant. He received the Medal from President William H. Taft on November 23, 1912. He died at age 68 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

 

MOH CITATION:

While in action against hostile Moros, voluntarily advanced alone, in the face of a heavy fire, to within about 15 yards of the hostile position and refastened to a tree a block and tackle used in checking the recoil of a mountain gun.
