Kevin Howard Haberfield GC (Direct Recipient)

Kevin Howard Haberfield (1957-) was born in July 1957 in Weston Super Mare, Somerset, the son of Kenneth and Irene Haberfield (nee Hawkins). After schooling at Worle Secondary Modern School in Weston Super Mare, he joined the British Aerospace College. In 1980, he decided to enlist with the Royal Marines (Special Boat Service). In 1981, he married in Weston Super Mare.

George Cross

Kevin was in the Royal Marines for nearly 33 years, finally retiring in 2012. Whilst in the Marines, he became a first class swimmer and canoeist, and was an expert in jungle and sea survival skills. He was a qualified boat and dive trainer as well as holding professional certificates for Yacht Master Ocean 200Gt Power and Sail, RYA Power Boat Level 2, Long Range Radio Operator, PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI Dive Master. He also had extensive experience in the Arctic.

Kevin left the Marines and began to work freelance in the security industry. On 31st July 2015, the London Gazette published his citation for the award of the George Cross. The citation was backdated to 22nd November 2005, though the details of his action were not released.
