b. 1833 Cattaraugus County, New York. d. 16/07/1903 New York.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 27/11/1863 Raccoon Ford, Virginia.

Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company E, 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Raccoon Ford, Virginia on November 27, 1863. His Medal was awarded to him on August 20, 1894. He was one of five 5th New York Cavalry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for Civil War bravery (the others being Private Thomas Burke, Private Julius D. Rhodes, Private John Tribe and Corporal John Walsh).

 

MOH CITATION:

After his command had retreated, this soldier, voluntarily and alone, returned to the assistance of a comrade and rescued him from the hands of three armed Confederates.
