He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Private in Company G, 19th US Infantry for action at Mount Amia, Cebu, Philippine Islands on February 4, 1900. His citation reads “Singlehanded defended his mortally wounded captain from an overwhelming force of the enemy.” His Medal was presented to him on 10 March 1902.
