Martin Schwenk MOH

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 03/07/1863 Millerstown, Pennsylvania.

Schwenk was born in Baden in Germany. After emigrating to the United States, he entered service in Boston. He enlisted under the name of George Martin. In early July 1863, in an attempt to carry a communication through the enemy’s lines in actions at Millerstown, Pennslyvainia, Sergeant Martin also rescued an officer from the hands of the Confederates. For most conspicuous gallantry, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 23, 1889.
