Michael Joseph McNally MOH

b. 29/06/1890 New York. d. 01/11/1916 Chesapeake Bay, Virginia.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 01/04/1899 Samoa.

Samoa Campaign Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted in the United States Army on November 18, 1879 and was discharged on November 18, 1897. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 1, 1897 and retired on April 9, 1915 in San Francisco, California as a Sergeant Major. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action on April 1, 1899 in Samoa.

He disappeared the night of November 1 and 2, 1916 from the Baltimore Steam Packet Company’s Steamer “Virginia” in the Chesapeake Bay. His body was recovered November 24, 1916 near Townsend, Virginia and he was buried in the Naval Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. The cemetery is now known as Captain Ted Conaway Memorial Naval Cemetery, and is located on the grounds of the United States Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia.
