b. 04/10/1874 Newmarket, County Cork, Ireland. d. 31/10/1937 Brooklyn, New York.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 11/05/1898 Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Newmarket, County Cork, Ireland, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the War with Spain as a Private on board the “USS Nashville”. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads “Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Kearney set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.” His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899.

 

MOH CITATION:

On board the U.S.S. Nashville during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Kearney set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.
