Moses Williams MOH

Indian Campaigns Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a First Sergeant, Company I, 9th U.S. Cavalry at the foothills of the Cuchillo Negro Mountains, New. Mexico. On August 16, 1881, in a running 3 to 4 hour flight, he skillfully conducted his detachment. With coolness, bravery, and devotion to duty he stood by his commanding officer in an exposed position under heavy fire from a large party of Indians and saved the lives of 3 of his comrades. He was one 18 African American Buffalo Soldiers that was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions during the Indian Wars. He did not receive his Medal until November 12, 1896.

 

MOH CITATION:

Rallied a detachment, skillfully conducted a running fight of three or four hours, and by his coolness, bravery, and unflinching devotion to duty in standing by his commanding officer in an exposed position under a heavy fire from a large party of Indians saved the lives of at least three of his comrades.
