Also known as Nicholas Meaher, he was issued the award on December 20, 1869 for his actions as a corporal with Company G, 1st US Cavalry, US Army, on October 20, 1869 during a campaign at the Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona. He enlisted in the US Army under the name Nicholas Meaher and was sent to the Western Frontier, and attained the rank of sergeant at the time of his discharge.
