Nicholas “Nick” Erickson MOH

b. 18/07/1870 Finland. d. 21/06/1930 New York.

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 11/05/1898 Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Finland, he immigrated to the United States in 1896. He served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as a Coxswain on board the “USS Marblehead”. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads “Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Erickson set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.” His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899.

 

MOH CITATION:

On board the U.S.S. Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Erickson set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action.
