Oliver D Greene MOH

An 1854 graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, he became a captain in the 2nd US Regular Artillery upon the outbreak of the American Civil War. He commanded Battery G, 2nd US Artillery at the July 1861 First Battle of Bull Run before being promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel of Volunteers and became Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Don Carlos Buell. He was then assigned to the staff of Major General William B. Franklin and served as Chief of Staff for the VI Corps at the Battle of Antietam, where his bravery in action would see him be awarded the Medal of Honor.

In March 1863 he was brevetted to the rank of brigadier general. He reverted back to the Regular Army he was promoted to the rank of major and served as the Assistant Adjutant General for the Department of the Missouri though the end of the war. Following the war, he remained in the Army and retired at the rank of Colonel in 1897. He received his Medal of Honor on 13 December 1893. He died at the age of 71.
