Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in the Chicago Mercantile Battery, Illinois Light Artillery. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 22, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He did not receive his Medal until January 15, 1895.

Carried with others by hand a cannon up to and fired it through the embrasure of the enemy’s works.
